From Latin symbolum, taken from Greek symbolon, related to symballo ('I join together'), from bállo ('I throw').
A símbolo (symbol) is a drawing or figure that can be written or drawn to represent a thought or a thing.
Written words themselves are symbols that represent sounds of spoken language. But there are many other symbols — = meaning equal, + meaning plus, and so on.
