Palabra Compuesta

From palabra and compuesta, from Latin componere (to put together)

Palabras compuestas (compound words) are words built by joining two or more simple words. English does the same thing (e.g. "toothbrush"), though in Spanish the two parts often fuse into a single word.

Examples

  • Bienestar ("well-being" — bien + estar)
  • Guardaespaldas ("bodyguard" — guarda + espaldas)
  • mediodía ("noon" — medio + día)
  • Claroscuro ("chiaroscuro" — claro + oscuro)
  • Limpiaparabrisas ("windshield wipers" — limpia + parabrisas)
