Etimología (etymology) is the word or words from which another is derived — in other words, the history of where a word comes from. For example, the etimología of ciencia ("science") is from Latin scientia ("knowledge"). The word etimología itself comes from Latin etymología, and before that from Greek etymología (literally "true meaning"), from étymos ("true, real") and lógos ("word").
Studying etimología is especially useful for English speakers learning Spanish, because many Spanish and English words share the same Latin and Greek roots. A Spanish word that looks unfamiliar at first often turns out to have a cousin in English — for example, escribir and "scribe", or bibliografía and "bibliography".
